The Lip Gloss Disaster

Lip gloss looks amazing — until real life gets involved. This client wanted that glassy, juicy lip look for her night out. High shine, Instagram-ready. I layered it perfectly: liner, lipstick, gloss on top. Flawless. She looked like she stepped out of an ad.

She left glowing, but an hour later, I got a text. A selfie popped up with gloss smeared across her cheek, her hair stuck to her lips, and a faint trail of sparkle on her chin. ‘Help,’ the caption said. Apparently, the night’s humidity had teamed up with her long hair and turned her lip into a glue trap.

Every time the wind blew, her hair caught in the gloss. She’d pull it away, but that only dragged the product further. By the time she hit the dance floor, it looked like abstract art across her face. Her friends tried to blot it off, but the stickiness lingered all night.

She told me later, laughing, that she spent half the night scrubbing her chin in the bathroom mirror. The gloss looked stunning in pictures, but in person? She swore never again. ‘Matte only from now on,’ she said, shaking her head.

Lesson learned: gloss photographs beautifully, but it’s high-maintenance in real life. If the client’s going to be outside, dancing, or anywhere near wind, maybe skip the glass lip and save them the headache.
