Weddings bring out the best and worst in people, and sometimes both in the same hour. This particular morning, the bride was calm, cool, collected. The bridesmaids? Not so much.
One bridesmaid sat down in my chair already frazzled. Hair half-done, dress still hanging in the corner, phone buzzing nonstop. I tried to reassure her, but as soon as I started foundation, she burst into tears. Full mascara-streaking, chest-heaving sobs before I’d even finished one side of her face.
Everyone froze. The bride rushed over, asking what was wrong. Through tears, the bridesmaid spilled that she was overwhelmed — pressure from family, stress about her dress, fear of ruining photos. Basically, the whole weight of wedding drama dumped itself in my chair.
I handed her tissues, fanned gently, and reminded her to breathe. Makeup-wise, I had to switch gears fast. Waterproof everything, light powders, neutral tones — anything that could survive more tears if they came. Slowly, she calmed down, and by the time I finished, she actually smiled at her reflection.
The rest of the day, she held it together, and in the photos? You’d never know she had a full meltdown an hour before. But me? I’ll never forget trying to apply concealer while she sobbed about her shoes not fitting.
Lesson learned: on wedding days, you’re not just the makeup artist — you’re part therapist. Pack waterproof products and patience in equal measure.
