The Foundation Flashback

Every MUA has a nightmare word burned into their brain: flashback. That ghostly white cast
that shows up under camera flash and ruins an otherwise flawless look.

This client was going to a big gala, paparazzi-style photos everywhere. I matched her
foundation perfectly, set her with powder, and she looked stunning in person. Smooth, warm,
glowing — a total win. Until the photos came back.

She sent me one the next day, furious. In the shot, her face looked ten shades lighter than her neck. Classic flashback. My stomach dropped. I replayed the whole session in my head. Then it hit me: the culprit was the SPF-heavy powder she insisted on bringing from home.

I’d warned her that SPF powders reflect light under flash. She waved me off, saying, ‘I always use this.’ So I dusted it lightly to keep her happy. And just like that, it came back to haunt us. Her friends looked amazing in photos, but she looked like she’d borrowed foundation from Casper.

Lesson learned: trust your instincts and stand firm. If you know a product is a flashback risk, don’t use it. Because when the cameras pop, it’s your name on the line, not theirs.
