Lip liner is magic when it’s used right. Sharpens the shape, keeps lipstick from bleeding, adds just enough drama. But too much liner? It can take a look from glam to cartoon real quick.
This client came in already convinced she needed her lips ‘overlined to the max.’ She pulled up inspo pics where the liner was practically a second lip. I explained we could enhance without going overboard, but she shook her head. ‘Nope, I want it obvious.’
Against my better judgment, I followed her request. Dark liner, exaggerated shape, lighter lipstick in the middle. Classic 90s throwback — but harsher. When she looked in the mirror, her face lit up. ‘Yes! That’s exactly it!’
Meanwhile, I was staring at her lips thinking they looked more like a stencil than a pout. Her friends walked in and did a double take. One whispered, ‘It’s giving clown vibes,’ not realizing she could hear. Awkward silence filled the room.
She insisted on keeping it, strutted out proudly, and I reminded myself: makeup is personal. Sometimes, the client loves what you hate. And as long as she felt stunning, that’s what mattered… even if the rest of us were side-eyeing the outline.
Lesson learned: not every trend needs to make a comeback. But if a client is dead set on it, you give them the confidence they’re looking for — and quietly keep your own opinion to yourself.
