The Photo Filter Face

It happens more often than you’d think: a client walks in, phone in hand, and says the words
every makeup artist dreads — “Can you make me look like this?” On the screen is a filtered
selfie. Pores blurred, eyes huge, nose slimmed, jawline sharp enough to cut glass. Basically,
a face that doesn’t exist in real life.

This client was no different. She shoved her phone at me before even sitting down. “I want
this exact look,” she said, pointing at the screen. My first thought? This wasn’t makeup — it
was digital surgery. No foundation, contour, or liner in the world was going to replicate a
Snapchat filter.

In that moment, I had to make a decision. Do I accept the job, knowing she’ll probably leave
unhappy? Or do I set boundaries and explain the reality — that filters are illusions, not
makeup looks? Because here’s the truth: no matter how good you are, if the client’s
expectations are rooted in fantasy, you’re already set up to fail.

I tried to explain gently. I told her makeup can enhance and transform, but it can’t shrink bone
structure or change proportions the way a filter does. She pushed back, insisting other MUAs
had done it for her before. Translation: someone probably said yes just to take her money,
then blamed the mirror later.

In the end, I made the call not to take her. It wasn’t worth the stress, the complaints, or the
inevitable bad word-of-mouth when she compared herself to her filter and felt disappointed.
Sometimes the smartest move as an artist is to say no.

Lesson learned: not every client is your client. When someone demands the impossible, you
either reset their expectations or walk away. Protect your artistry, your energy, and your
reputation. Because filters fade — but a bad client story sticks around forever.
