The Diva Demand

Some clients walk in calm, chill, and grateful. Others walk in ready for battle. This was
definitely the latter. A local performer had booked me for her show look — glam, dramatic,
stage-ready. We’d agreed on the vision days before. Or so I thought.

Halfway through the makeup, everything seemed fine. Skin flawless, eyes snatched, lip bold.
She looked at herself in the mirror, nodded, and then out of nowhere said: ‘Actually… I don’t
like it. Change everything. I want soft glam instead.’

I blinked. Soft glam? With thirty minutes until she had to be on stage? We’d spent over an
hour building this dramatic look. Now she wanted the complete opposite — fresh skin,
barely-there eyes, nude lip. Total reset. I glanced at the clock and felt my soul leave my body.

I explained as calmly as possible that there wasn’t enough time for a full redo. She crossed
her arms and said, ‘Figure it out.’ Meanwhile, her manager hovered in the doorway, looking
just as stressed as me. The tension was thick enough to cut with a contour brush.

So, I compromised. I softened the liner, blended out the shadow, swapped the lip for nude,
and toned down the contour. Not a complete redo, but enough to shift the vibe. She kept
sighing and rolling her eyes like I’d ruined her life. But when she hit the stage, the lights hit just right and the look worked. The crowd cheered like nothing had ever gone wrong.

Backstage after the show, she barely mumbled a thank you before storming off. The manager
gave me the real gratitude: ‘You saved the night.’ And honestly? That’s all I needed.

Lesson learned: sometimes you can’t win them all. Not every client will be happy — but if the
look works on stage, you did your job. Period.
