The Eyelash Escape

Every makeup artist has a story about false lashes misbehaving, but this one takes the cake
— or should I say, the birthday cake. It was supposed to be a flawless glam session for a
client’s big 25th birthday night out. She wanted bold eyes, a snatched contour, and lashes that
could stop traffic. I was ready to deliver.

We’d nailed the base, the highlighter was catching light in all the right ways, and the smokey
shadow looked like it belonged on a magazine cover. Then came the lashes: dramatic, wispy,
the kind that flaps like butterfly wings when you blink. She loved them instantly, fluttering at
herself in the mirror and laughing about how her friends were going to be jealous. I sealed
them with glue, did my checks, and sent her on her way.

Two hours later, while I was cleaning my brushes, my phone buzzed. It was her —
mid-celebration, half-laughing, half-panicked. ‘The lash came off!’ she yelled over the bass
thumping in the background. Apparently, after a round of birthday shots and an aggressive
dance circle, one of her lashes had decided it no longer wanted to be part of the party. And
where did it land? Not on the floor, not stuck to her cheek — but on a stranger’s arm. The guy
thought it was some kind of drink garnish.

She was mortified, her friends were howling, and people around them kept asking what it was.
One girl even picked it up and tried to put it in her hair like a clip. Meanwhile, my client was
texting me frantic selfies of one perfect eye and one looking half-asleep. Honestly, it was
chaos — but the kind you can’t help laughing at.

Here’s the thing about lashes: even when you think they’re locked in, sweat, humidity, and
wild dance moves can test their limits. Did I use the right glue? Absolutely. Did I prep
properly? Of course. But sometimes, lashes just decide to stage a breakout. And when they
do, they take no prisoners.

To her credit, my client didn’t let it ruin her night. She peeled off the other lash, popped on a
quick coat of mascara from her purse and went back to the dance floor. ‘I guess I’m rocking
the natural look now,’ she said in her next text, followed by a string of laughing emojis. By
morning, the lash had become a full story time feature among her friends — they called it ‘The
Great Lash Escape.’

From a professional perspective, I always tell clients: lashes are dramatic, but they’re also
high maintenance. If you’re going to be sweating, crying, or dancing like it’s 1999, sometimes
it’s better to stick with a layered mascara look or choose shorter, sturdier falsies that won’t
budge. Glam is fun, but practical glam saves emergencies.

For me, it was a reminder that no matter how carefully you plan, real life has its own sense of
humor. And sometimes, the best save isn’t glue — it’s laughter. Because at the end of the
day, makeup should enhance the memory, not become the meltdown.
